Learn the Kanun
MEET YOUR TEACHER
Instructor: Tarik Hussein
Tarik Hussein began his musical journey at the age of six with the Piano and Spanish Guitar, falling in love with the likes of Bach, Chopin and Albéniz. Nine years later he began studying Turkish Classical Music on the Oud with the renowned musician Sabahattin Akdagcik, and joined the Australian Turkish Music Ensemble. When he first played a Kanun, he immediately realised that it was his “totem” instrument. It had the flexibility of the Piano, the purity of the Spanish Guitar and the soul of the Oud. Tarik has performed with The Brandenburg Orchestra, The Turkish Huzur Ensemble, The Persian Shahbaz Ensemble and most recently is a member of The Three Rivers Ensemble.
Tarik began teaching music in 2010 and founded Hira Music School in 2022, which has allowed Tarik to share his passion for spiritually grounded music with his community. His initial focus has been to develop the first generation of locally trained Kanun players in Sydney.
Recordings of some of Tarik’s performances have reached over 1 million viewers on YouTube.
